Designing the Ultimate Bathroom Retreat

When you walk into your bathroom, you want to feel as though you have stepped into another world, a world where you can truly relax and enjoy a sense of calm. But in truth, more contemporary bathroom designs are created with one purpose in mind, practical uses. While this is all well and good, more contemporary bathroom remodeling project ideas are focusing on the luxuries that make a bathroom a guilty pleasure. Here are some ideas to create the ultimate bathroom retreat.

Soaking in the tub

If you are looking to create the perfect bathroom, you should consider installing a larger bath tub or Jacuzzi. While this might seem a bit unnecessary for your contemporary bathroom remodeling project, you want to increase the space in the tub to make this the ultimate tub and not just an ordinary bath. You want to have plenty of room to sit and enjoy that bubble bath when you finally have a free moment. These contemporary bathroom designs can be costly, but you are worth it! Look around your bathroom right now to see if there is unnecessary space where your bigger, better bathtub can reside.

Why not catch the game too?

When you want to relax in your ultimate bathroom, you should be able to relax and enjoy the space. Why not install a high definition television as well as sophisticated stereo system into the room as well? For this contemporary bathroom remodeling project, you will want to hire the professionals in order to ensure that your equipment will be safe from the water that you are splashing around as well as include a safe system of turning it on and off or adjusting the channels. For these contemporary bathroom designs, you may want to keep the system out of sight until you want to use it, as this will add to the luxurious feeling of the room. Perhaps the television can drop down when you want to watch something or the stereo speakers can be disguised. In any case, this project should be a blissful addition to your bathroom, though you might have people fighting over who gets to go next.

Other fun luxury accessories

When you are soaking in the tub of luxury and listening to your favorite CD, you can also add these accessories to complete the ultimate bathroom setting:

  • Heated towel racks. These electric racks will help keep your towels warm and dry when you get out of the tub, that is, if you ever do.
  • Ceramic tiling. Though this does not offer any additional comfort to this particular contemporary bathroom remodeling project, it certainly looks much better than traditional surfaces.
  • Decorations. By keeping your dcor simple, you will immediately cause it to look richer. Try adding candles, flowers, and statues to the room as accents.

When you want to create the ultimate bathroom, you need to understand what makes your bathroom stand out from the rest. It is not the contemporary bathroom design; but the special touches that make this into a luxury spa everyday.

High Pressure Water Drain Jetting For Clogs

For many people, the science behind new technologies that have been developed to clean sewer drains couldn't be more mundane. Not many homeowners care much about methods to unblock a badly clogged drain until it becomes necessary for them to use the technology for themselves. High pressure water drain jetting is a relatively recent development that allows drain cleaners to literally blast obstructions out of your drains, but it doesn't just consist of a hose that sprays a stream of water. Instead, high pressure water drain jet systems are sophisticated pieces of equipment that often cost tens of thousands of dollars.

That's not to say that hiring someone to use this equipment on your clogged drains will cost an arm and a leg, however. You'll likely spend less than two hundred dollars to have your sewer drains professionally cleaned with a high pressure jet system, but there is no better way to eliminate blockages. While a simple drain snake can take care of smaller clogs from simple obstructions and tree roots, the high-pressure water jet is able to blast away layers of grease, scaling, debris, dirt and even rocks that may have built up in the pipe over time.

High pressure water jetting is not meant to be utilized by anyone but trained professionals who have experience using the equipment. Because the water is forced from the jet at such a high pressure, it is easily capable of seriously injuring anyone who uses the equipment incorrectly. If you have your drains serviced with a high pressure jet, make sure that you and your family stay well away from the equipment while it is being used.

In spite of its potential danger to inexperienced users, though, high pressure water jetting is safe and quiet enough to be used inside of your home if necessary. The jetting system itself is usually a large unit towed by a hitch, but the line is often hundreds of feet long and can be taken into any building safely. As long as the specially designed tip of the jet hose is well inside of the drain pipe before the system is turned on, it is very safe to use.

High pressure water jetting isn't the right choice for every kind of clog. Simpler clogs can often be fixed by a less expensive sewer snake or other means. If your drain has significant problems from layers of heavy built up debris and grease, however, the drain jet is the best option. Although it is slightly more costly, a professionally applied high pressure drain jetting can make your blocked pipes look and operate like new again.

Tile Bathroom Counter Top - Installing It Yourself!

Tile bathroom counter tops will upgrade your bathroom. Few projects can improve the bathroom of your home more than tile bathroom counter top installation. Tile counter tops are not only beautiful, they are very practical too. You can spend much money to have a ceramic tile bathroom counter top installed or you can do it yourself. In this article see the steps to install a ceramic tile bathroom counter top.

First choose your tile. This is tough, since there are many choices of ceramic tile for bathroom counters. You must choose between an endless variety of sizes, colors, textures, grades, finishes.

Decide how you will trim the tile too. If the edges will be exposed, choose tile with finished glazed edges. Some floor tiles have glazed edges and look great as counter top tiles. Porcelain tile is used often in bathrooms. Since porcelain tile has a slick glass-like finish it's easy to clean and great for a bathroom. Also many porcelain tile models come with all kinds of trim pieces for edges and accessories. Accessories include soap dishes, towel racks and related fixtures.

Part of the art to installing ceramic tile counter tops is deciding how to arrange tiles. How do you start? Where should cuts be made? Which layout looks most attractive? After your base is installed, try laying some tiles, without adhesive, on the counter and see what looks best. Try different arrangements to see what you like. Move the dry tile around and save yourself a lot of time ripping out tile and starting over.

The base for the tile is important. Your tile bathroom counter top can be installed over many materials. Formica is a good base. Just check with your dealer to choose an adhesive suited for the surface. A favorite base is cement board. With cement board you can use ready mixed latex glue as an adhesive for ceramic tile counter tops.

When you're ready to start laying your ceramic tile, it's much like laying a floor. Spread the adhesive over an area with your tile trowel. Spread the adhesive with the notched side of your trowel to get the right amount of adhesive. The size of the trowel notches and the angle of the trowel determines how much adhesive you apply.

Lay your tiles following your plan you made with the dry tile. Use spacers to get the gaps between tiles consistent.

You cut tile at edges or around fixtures using a cutter board or a wet saw. Finish trim using tile nippers. After the tile adhesive is set, prepare to grout. Choose sanded grout if the joints are 1/8 inch or larger. An excellent alternative for a tile bathroom counter top is epoxy grout, which is excellent on any tile surface in a bathroom. Epoxy grout doesn't stain and is completely waterproof.

Those are the basic steps to completely update your bathroom with a tile counter top. This beautiful, practical surface can last for decades with minimum maintenance!

Have other questions about a tile bathroom counter top? I know laying ceramic tile can be puzzling.

Fiberglass Shower Pan Tips - Fallbrook Home Remodeling

Fiberglass shower pans are a quick and relatively cheap shower floor. The traditional way to install a shower floor is to build a masonry base and then set ceramic tile over the base. As you can see, the skill level for installing fiberglass pans is much lower.

You can find standard shower pans at your local building supply store. These pans will be standard sizes, but you can special order other sizes and sometimes even custom sizes. If you have an odd drain location or size, the price for your application will be much higher..

Often a fiberglass shower pan fits into an existing location without replacing the walls. For your older ceramic tile shower, you can replace just the floor and enough of the walls to get the replacement pan in place. That's assuming the walls are still in good shape. Often the walls are damaged if water has worked behind the walls. The walls will often break as the floor is removed.

If you are installing a new shower, fiberglass shower pans can be used with ceramic tile walls or with fiberglass walls that match the floor. Often the pans are used in handicapped access showers so there is little or no curb and a special non-skid surface.

Compared to traditional masonry shower pan construction, fiberglass options have advantages and disadvantages. The advantages are: easier to install, quicker, cheaper, easy to keep clean. The traditional masonry and ceramic tile advantages are: lasts longer with proper care, looks better, less subject to wear and damage.

Note also that a fiberglass shower pan available at your local store is not suitable as a base for ceramic tile. There are tile ready shower pans, but they are different and more expensive.

Walk in Bathtubs - Remodel the Bathroom With Resale Value in Mind

Our family was involved in the supply of siding and window materials in Denver for years. We saw some ethical contractors and some who charged people for materials and work in an unethical manner. Are You Planning to Decorate Your New Home

Who thinks of decorating a water closet or a bathroom? Well everybody does it nowadays.

This is the latest trend. Decorating a house does not always mean the decoration of the bedrooms, the hall and the kitchen. But it really means that the whole house should be designed or in other words decorated. Nobody is considered stupid for decorating the doors and bathrooms with appropriate hardware like door knobs, towel warmers, etc.

Make sure you measure the dimensions before replacing or building a new water closet or bathroom. If you think decorating or designing the doors and bathroom would not change anything, then let me tell me that keeping in mind the smaller things like the door knobs and the matching of the towel warmers with the doors of the bathroom will make a better look to your home. This will only enhance the beauty of your house. After all these smaller things are done you would not care about others comment instead you would enjoy yourself passing more time in your bathroom.

The trends and latest designs come and go, so better choose the designs that you like the most. Some times it is better to select the style that is common if you don`t like experimenting. One such common shower door style is the bypass door. It is a double door style where the doors slide in a frame which is mounted on the end walls of the tub. There is one more thing to be kept in mind and that is the curtains of the bathroom.

Outdoor Shed Foundations - Where to Start

When looking to build your own outdoor shed the first place to start is with the shed foundation. Your storage shed needs to be built on a strong foundation. Whether it is wood or concrete your slab needs to be a firm base that your outdoor shed will be built on. If you don't have a good shed foundation then your shed will not last as long as it should.

Wondering when to use a concrete slab or wood for a shed foundation? Here are the two main reasons for choosing one or the other. A wood foundation for your outdoor shed will allow you to move it if you ever decide that your original spot is not right. If you use a concrete slap then you will not be able to move it at all.

After you figured out what type of foundation you want you need to start to assemble it. If you're going to use the wood foundation, make sure you use pressure treated wood. Any home improvement store will have it just make sure to ask for help if you're unsure of the type and size you need. Tell them you're building an outdoor shed and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

An easy way to build a nice strong shed foundation is to get a couple of skids. These can be found at just about any store and usually they are in the back and free. Lay the skids out and placing your pressure treated wood around the outside nail then together. Using 3/4" plywood for the floor will give your outdoor shed a very strong foundation. Using bricks under the skids will help level the shed floor off and also keep any moisture from getting into our wood foundation.

If you decide to use the concrete slab make sure you have picked out the correct location, as this will be a permanent structure on your property. If you need your outdoor shed to support a lot of heavy equipment then you want to use the concrete slab foundation. It will be able to hold a lot more weight than the wood foundation.

It's always best to have a plan of attack before starting any home improvement project: it can save you time and money. Think about what you plan to keep inside your outdoor shed, if its going to be heavy equipment and you know that the wood foundation is going to be raised up off the ground 5-8" you may need a ramp to get stuff in and out. A concrete foundation can be made to be ground level. Keeping all these things in mind before you start building your outdoor shed will make this go so much faster and give you less headaches.

Famous Interior Designers Series - Jean Royere

One of the all-time greatest French designers, Jean Royere succeeded in establishing his individuality by creating and implementing unique designs for interior space. Born in 1902 in France, Jean Royere had started showing his skills as an interior decorator at the age of 29, shortly after resigning from a trading firm. He then began to work with Pierre Gouffe in 1931. From there, he rose to fame with his unique unconventional approach to interior design. Jean found immediate success in 1934 when he designed the new layout of the Brasserie Carlton on the Champs Elysees.

In all his designs Jean Royere employed traditional artisan techniques and often his designs are personal and innovative, though unimaginative. He had opened his own gallery in 1942 at 184, Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honore for the purpose of exhibiting his collections. He later opened branch offices in Cairo, Beirut, Peru and Iran in 1946, 1947, 1953 and 1958 respectively. His works in the Middle East helped him earn large commissions which also gave him the opportunity to work with the royalty and the heads of various states. Royere's royal patrons included King Farouk of Egypt, King Hussein of Jordan and the Shah of Iran, all of whom where impressed by his creations and hence entrusted Jean with the interior design of their palaces.

Jean Royere had different innovative interior furniture design concepts in his mind and his products often combine bright colours, organic forms and precious materials. Some of his commercial works include the Sheet Stool, designed using ebonized wood and goat-fur upholstery, the Bar cart in brass and ebonized wood, and the adjustable floor lamp designed in 1956. He had his initial designs of chairs with perforated metal backs and seats, for the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques in 1937 and these had served as the precursors of his related future designs.

Jean's works are often being exhibited at various exhibitions and art galleries. Some of the unusual works of Jean which were exhibited in the Sonnabend Gallery in New York included the rare 'Flaque' low table, the 'Ours Polaire' sofa, the 'Starlette' bed, a 'visiteur du soir' model settee, and a huge collection of lighting fixtures such as the 'Persian', the 'Eiffel Tower' and the 'Mushroom'.

Following decoration and furnishing for the French delegation in Helsinki in 1951, he also found time to undertake and complete interior decoration for residences of his family members, spread across Saint-Tropez, Auray, Marly and the Baleric Islands. Leaving Paris in 1980, Jean spent his final years in the United States. Before leaving for US, Jean donated his entire collection of archives to the Museum of the Decorative Arts of Paris. Royere died in 1981 in US, after enjoying a flourishing career from 1931 to 1970.

Suspended Ceilings - Home Tips

Suspended ceiling or known also as dropped ceilings are ceilings that are placed underneath the existing one and hide any kinds of wiring or piping that may be sticking out of the current ceiling. Suspended ceilings are a great idea as they allow you to hide all of the clutter that is up there already allowing for maintenance to be carried out on anything that is there without as much risk as you would without the suspended ceiling being there.

They are made up from a grid that contains metal frameworks which is held together with wires which connect up to the existing ceiling, in this grid tiles are placed and linked up, this is what makes the basis of a suspended ceiling even thought there are many different types of suspended ceilings, they all seem to follow the same basis.

Suspended ceiling started being made to help with sound levels in rooms and offers sound absorption. This is made by adding insulation above the tiles, this helps to absorb the sound in the room.

Now though sound absorption is not the only reason for getting suspended ceilings installed, nowadays you can have a lot of different reasons for example you may want to hide pipes or create air ducts for you building, if this is the case then suspended ceilings are definitely the way forward for you.

When you are thinking about getting your suspended ceilings installed there should be one main concern on your mind, this is Safety. You need to know that your ceilings are going to be safe and cause no harm to anyone or be a hazard in any way. You are going to need to make sure that the tiles and anything else you place up in the suspended ceilings in firmly attached to the grid otherwise there can be problems with the ceiling falling down or in the event of an emergency where the ceiling has to be pulled down I.e. a fire, then the whole ceiling can be brought down as one and doesn't come down in pieces causing major hazards.

If you are going to install suspended ceilings in a clean room then you need to make sure that the suspended ceiling complies with all rules and laws that are set. If your suspended ceilings are in any way contaminated with dust or particles then your whole clean room becomes pointless and questionable.

Clean rooms are required in many different industries which include food, electronic and pharmaceuticals. If your room does not meet the industry standards you can be closed down, so therefore making sure that your suspended ceilings in no way effect your business you will need to make sure that you can meet requirements with your ceilings. You will need to have a steady flow of purified air being brought into the room; this can be easily incorporated into suspended ceilings in the ceiling void above.

So before purchasing your suspended ceilings you should make sure that it complies 100% with all of your health and safety regulations.

Different Types of Showers

Electric showers have gained more popularity than other types of showers due to its functional superiority. Stored water is not required for operating one. These showers comprise of an inbuilt system, which draws water from an inlet to feed the heating device. However, maintaining equilibrium in water pressure at the inlet is important to achieve maximum benefits from these showers.

Thousands of different shower models have swamped the market these days. Of these, Mira electric showers and the Triton showers stand out due to their added features. Irrespective of the model you prefer, it is of paramount importance that water supply pipes are fixed properly below the surface of the wall or the floor before installation. A separate electric circuit dedicated for the electric shower unit is an additional security feature advised by most designers and architects.

Many new innovations have come about. Standard fixed showerheads are being replaced quickly by the more convenient hand held ones. Large top showers with several sprays placed at different angles to treat different parts of the body at one time are also gaining popularity. These outlets can be activated or deactivated as per requirement.

If you are planning to buy showers for your house, several aspects need to be kept in mind. The heating systems already in place, the plumbing, electric supply lines and connections, the space available in the bathroom and moreover the tastes of the inhabitants should be evaluated. Once installed, these showers can turn bathing into a fulfilling and invigorating experience.

Ways to Empty Your Drainage

One of the hard things to resolve aside from stains is a clogged drain. It can't be helped. Clogged drains in the kitchen sink are caused by bits of food while hairs clog bathroom drainage. A slow draining sink or bathroom is extremely annoying. Fixing this can create a hole in your pocket.

In a restaurant, there are different types of drains. While some don't even have a proper drainage system which can cause a headache to kitchen staff. It is very important that a kitchen has decent working drainage especially if it is a very large and busy kitchen like those in restaurants and hotels. Cooking activities and preparation at these places are done at large every single day.

Filters' role in a household is very essential. They can cover water system, ventilation equipment, drains and sink. Through these filters, the kitchen can be made safe and comfortable for food preparation. Each day may go on swiftly without any hassle. That also depends on how well kept your house is.

There are natural products and items at home like vinegar, baking soda, lemon and of course, plunger which you can use to resolve your drainage and other kitchen cleaning problems.

  1. Vinegar - All you have to do is mix one third part of vinegar with one third part of water and three drops of dish washing liquid in a spray bottle. This has same function as to a floor cleaner. Simply spray and mop. This is also a good concoction for deodorizing a room especially on tile floors. The drain can sometimes grow plants. If you happen to see roots growing from the kitchen sink's drainage, pour vinegar over it to destroy.

  2. Baking soda - Works almost the same way like your commercial abrasives for scrubbing surfaces. It can also act as a great deodorizer. The smell of meat and leftover foods in freezer and refrigerator can be absorbed simply by a box of baking soda.

For kitchen sink or bathroom drain, mix vinegar and borax or baking soda. Pour it down the drain and leave for about twenty minutes at least. Foams coming from the drain mean that the solution is taking effect. Pour boiling water afterward. You can use plunger to help agitate the impacted material. Pour boiling water again until there is no more clog.

  3. Lemon - For soap scum, use lemons. A lemon is a good cleaner of brass and copper too. Combination of lemon and baking soda can be a good cleaning aid. How? Here's what you should do:

    • Cut lemon in half.
    • On the sliced part sprinkle baking soda.
    • Scrub lemon on surfaces and stains.

To make a polishing a solution, combine one cup of olive oil with one half cup lemon juice. Use this to keep your wood furniture shiny and spotless.

As deodorizer, use lemon or orange peeling. Place them in the kitchen or near the drain.

  4. Salt - Pour salt down into the clogged drain to unfreeze drain pipes. This can be done to flush water during the winter season.

Those items above may be good cleaners, but they can do nothing with rust. For rusty pipes, use natural cleaning products that are meant to remove rust in no time.

For your information, vinegar can cause skin, throat, eyes and nose irritations. There are also other commercially made products that have allergens. You can avoid its contact with your skin and clothing by wearing protective gear. Or buy organic cleaning products that are safe to use with or without gloves.

Clean your drain and the whole house with ease and efficiency with green cleaning products. Because they are safe and environment friendly, you just can't go wrong.

Bathroom Floor - How to Choose the Best

The Bathroom is an important part of your home. Commode, sink, shower, bathtub are some useful items included in a bathroom. Besides, floor of a bathroom is another important factor to be taken care of.

You need to think carefully before deciding your bathroom flooring materials. Bathroom floor should not be a slippery one. It should be resistant enough to withstand the moisture of the room, to reduce the danger of slipping.

A home owner should choose a bathroom floor based on his taste and requirement. Bathroom floors are available in several designs; you need to pick up from them. If you have a strong possibility to stay in the present house for a longer period, you should always opt for durable and robust bath room flooring material. Marble flooring is a better option here, as far as longevity is concerned. You need to invest a handsome amount for marble flooring, but this is surely compensated for its durable nature. Marble floors also have a very glamorous look with little maintenance cost. So, marble flooring in the bathroom is definitely a "value for money" proposition for you.

Some people prefer to go carpeting their bathroom floors to make the room much warmer. But, carpeting is not always a good idea due to the moist nature of the bathroom. It may harm the foundation of the room due to water leakage through carpet. You can try ceramic tiles flooring to keep the room framing stronger and drier.

Hardwood flooring is another option for your bathroom floor. You need to seal the floor with water proof material to make it more moisture resistant. Laminate floors are also very much popular. They are available in different color and style, and very decorative. But laminate flooring and hardwood flooring are a bit slippery comparing to other conventional floors. You should also need to take extra care for keeping them as drier as possible.

You have to think carefully before opting for any bathroom flooring material. Your bathroom floor should meet your requirement and aesthetic sense.

Solar Power Generator - Home Tips

The sun is by far the biggest energy resource that is known to man and available for use right now. The fact that we get most of our energy through the unsustainable mining and misuse of planetary fossil resources is unacceptable when you understand just how much energy is emitted by the sun and how easy it is to capture and turn into usable electrical energy for our homes. On an annual basis, enough solar energy reaches the surface of the earth to cover more than ten thousand times the annual global energy demand and reserves. It is more than time that we started to use this solar energy to its full potential and stopped the needless destruction of our planet.

There is a distinction that can be made between direct solar energy and indirect solar energy. If you are interested in building a solar generator for your home, then it is direct solar energy that can be converted into useful energy and used for electrical or heating purposes. Wind, rivers and plants are examples of indirect forms of solar energy and can be used to generate electrical energy as well, although that is another subject matter. These technologies all use direct solar energy in one way or another:

: solar thermal power plants.
: solar water heating systems.
: passive heating by solar.
: photovoltaics or solar cells that produce electricity.

All of these technologies are important in the overall scheme of renewable energy solutions for the planet, however, if you are interested in generating electricity for your home, it is the technologies relating to solar cells or photovoltaics that will be of interest to you. It is much easier to produce your own solar energy system than you would ever imagine, all it takes is a small initial investment and a little time and motivation.

Building a solar power generator is an interesting, fun and important project that can reduce your energy bills and help you to save the planet at the same time. There are some fantastic online guides out there that can provide step by step instructions to help you to become more energy efficient and carbon neutral than you probably thought was possible. By beginning to use the sun more for our electricity needs we can all benefit along with our planet - so get yourself a guide and start building your solar power generator today.

Modular Home Construction Techniques

The truth, is that while modular homes have become more popular and can be seen dotting the landscape with far more regularity, most people are completely unfamiliar with modular home construction techniques. How is it that a modular home can be constructed so quickly and still retain their structural integrity and high over all level of quality.

Modular Home Construction Factories

By and large, modular homes are constructed indoors in a warehouse setting. In some factories some work may be done outdoors and in others the work may be done in it's entirety indoors on the factory floor.

An Assembly Line Process

They basically move down the assembly line in the same way that automobiles are built. Because modular homes are built on a steel frame and have their own wheels, they are simply pulled along to each work station by a forklift.

First Things First

It begins be constructing the steel undercarriage. This is then rolled onto the factory floor where the floor is next sheeted. After the floor is sheeted, measurements are taken and chalk lines are snapped to delineate where each wall will be placed.

The Walls are Stood in Place

In most modular home factories the walls are framed in a separate station and then brought to the modular home where they are stood and securely attached. After all the walls are attached, the plumbing, ductwork and electrical wires are all ran.

The Last Finishing Touches

Finally, the siding is applied, the finished flooring is laid down and all of the appliances and fixtures are installed. The very last thing that will be done on a modular home is a final exacting cleanup to remove any small spots and then it is given it's final inspection.

Add Value to Your Home - Refurbish Your Kitchen Or Bathroom

TV's Phil Spencer has recently been urging homeowners to "do everything they can" to improve the saleability of their properties saying that improvements to kitchens and bathrooms are among the best ways of selling houses. A recent Lloyds TSB Tickbox.net and Opinion Matters survey found that 73% of people in Greater London claim that installing a new kitchen is the best way of adding value to a property. The Lloyds TSB poll showed that a high percentage of people thought that an energy efficient boiler was the environmentally friendly home improvement that added most value to a property.

In a Telegraph feature earlier in 2008, '50 ways to improve your home', upgrading your existing kitchen was at number 19 whilst 'banishing broken bathrooms' came in at number 20.

There are many things that can be done to improve the saleability of your home and increase its value where kitchens and bathrooms are concerned. Here are just a few ideas:

  1. Fit a spacious walk in shower - far more convenient and practical than an over-bath shower.
  2. Install under floor heating in a bathroom - this will remove the need for unsightly radiators thus saving space and creating a far more seamless design. What's more, under floor heating is far healthier as the heat is more evenly distributed throughout the room rather than staying at head height, and it also keeps nasty things like mould and damp at bay.
  3. Update your kitchen so that it includes built in modern conveniences - this will really make an impact on potential buyers because it's a job they won't have to do themselves.
  4. A modern eco-friendly condensing boiler will help tip the scales in your favour when selling a property because potential buyers will be able to enjoy the benefits of reduced fuel bills and increased energy efficiency.
  5. Consider the installation of a solar hot water heating system which will offer considerable savings on fuel bills for your potential buyers.
  6. If space allows, add a downstairs cloakroom. Modern WCs and basins come in the most compact of sizes and it is relatively straightforward to liberate some space and transform it into a very convenient feature.
  7. If your bathroom does not need a complete overhaul but could do with a little 'something' then go for some new taps. Choosing attractive taps from a high quality range will miraculously transform the look of any bathroom, and it should be a relatively low cost exercise in terms of your potential return.

If you are looking to improve the saleability of your property then a good place to start is by talking to your plumber who will be able to give you sound advice on your heating system options and energy efficiency for starters. A good plumber will work with reputable kitchen fitters and other professional craftsmen to provide a complete service and overall they will be able to provide you with space-saving and energy efficient solutions.

How to Adapt a House and Bathroom For an Elderly or Disabled Person

You may find that as someone gets into their most senior years and/or has a disability that you are now in a position where you need to make some alternations around the home to accommodate them. There are some common alterations that will need to be done around the home in general which we will address first. Then we will look at how to adapt a bathroom for a disabled person or a less-able person; and lastly we will look at who might be able to give you some help and support in the way of planning and financial support.

General & Common Alternations

In order to make the home more suitable and manageable for someone with a disability or someone who is less able, such as an older person, then there are a few general alterations you can make to their home as addressed below:

1. The first thing you need to consider if the person is in a wheelchair is that the corridors and doorways are wide enough to let a wheelchair pass through with ease.
2. All facilities should be at a reachable height. This will include door handles, telephones and most importantly light switches.
3. If the disabled or elderly person can walk a little to reach certain amenities, then a support or grab rail will need to be put in place.
4. If you are living in a two-story building, then there is the stair issue. You may need to consider installing a stair lift. If you can, put the bedroom and bathroom downstairs for easy access, but this is not always feasible.
5. Ramps and general access to and from the home. This could be in the form of ramps and side handles into doorways.

Adapting Bathroom Facilities

1. As mentioned above, if you can, have a bathroom on the ground floor
2. You definitely need grab rails in the bathroom especially beside the toilet and bath-tub / shower area.
3. Basin at a reachable level with taps that are easy to turn on and off.
4. Would a walk-in bath tub or shower unit be the best solution for you? This is the important factor in a bathroom suited to a disabled or less-able person.
5. Think about having a higher than normal toilet
6. A back-rest against the toilet cistern
7. Light switches and all facilities at a reachable level so no distress is necessary

As you can see from the above that adapting a home for a disabled or less-able elderly person is no minor conquest.

It might be better suited if you could find a home that already has all these modifications in place. If not, then this will give you an idea of what might have to be done.

I know what you are thinking now - you are thinking how much will all of this cost?

Yes, it will cost a few thousand $/ but don't despair as there is help at hand.

Help And Assistance

You can get advice and financial help from:

  • Occupational Therapist
  • Community Care
  • Local GP
  • Public Health
  • Local Government for Planning Permission and Grants
  • Care For The Elderly
  • Mobility Aids and Grants

I sincerely hope you found the above of some use to you. I had a close Aunt who became wheelchair bound through to illness, and these are most the of the alternations that my family had to accommodate for her illness.

What to Look For in Bathroom Ceramic Tiles

What really impresses about bathroom ceramic tiles is their singularity of purpose- that of creating a sublime space soaked in style and sophistication. The endless selection of designs, finishes and patterns ensures that your bathroom remains more than just an edifice of brick and stone. Even the most discerning homeowner is sure to find it hard to resist their bewitching appeal.

A patch of brilliantly colored tiles near the sink, tub surround or countertop is sure to put an end to the quotidian drabness and add spunk to the surroundings. It just takes a few single tiles in between bathroom field tiles to create a colossal impact on onlookers.

All you need is a dazzling and delightful ceramic tile flooring pattern to infuse freshness into all things alive and inanimate in the bathroom.

  • If you are looking for a no-fuss modern look, then bright, vivid colors juxtaposed with plain backgrounds are sure to steal the show. The use of intricate designs imparts tremendous visual depth.
  • If the quixotic quotient of a style-centric Victorian bathroom sends you into a tizzy, install floral ceramic tiles in soft, subtle shades like blue, green or pink. They are sure to envelope the space in a cloak of exotic mystery. Take this sophistication to a whole new level with wooden floors and a handpainted ceramic sink.
  • The colors that you choose must compliment the theme and character of the bathroom. Bright, effusive colors give the country theme a fillip, while warm shades like yellow and brown enhance the cozy ambience. Bright shades like red and black must make inroads only into relatively large spaces, while whites and beiges give an illusion of space.

Proper Stair Parts For a Good Stairway

If you grew up in a home that has stairs you will most probably have the memory of playing in the railings of the stairs and sliding down the handrail.

This memory might not be possible if your staircase is not sturdy enough to support your weight. With this, you know that you will have to be careful in finding the right stair parts that you will use to create the proper staircase in your home.

If you have a home and it has two or more floors, then you should start considering the stair parts that you will need for your stairs. The stairs are present in your home for practical reasons. You will have to use the stairs to go to one floor to the other. For other homeowners, they use the stairs to add dcor in their home. This is also an important aspect especially if your staircase is big and visible in your home. If this is the case, then you will have to ensure that your staircase is not only safe but it should also be pleasing to the eyes of your visitors. In achieving this, you will have to ensure that you will get the right pieces that will help you get a sturdy staircase and also one that has interesting designs to match the look of your home.

The stair parts that you need are easy to find but this does not mean that you will already stop searching once you find one that you like. It is possible that you can easily find one type that you think fits your home but it will be better if you will continue searching and compare the pieces that you see in the market. If you are able to compare the stair parts, you will have a bigger chance of getting the one that you will really like. This will also be a good way to avoid future problems.

You can start thinking of the design that you like and get a professional help when it comes to constructing it. The carpenters will do their job this time but you can instruct them on the kind of outcome that you want from your own staircase.

Now, your home will only get the right staircase if you will invest on the stair parts that you will use. It would be best to start the search now and continue with it so that you can cover more types in the market and really get the kind that you can enjoy having. You should remember that the staircase is not only important because you want to play with its railings. The safety of your family will depend on it and it will also have a big impact in the look of your home.

Ceramic Tiles Vs Natural Stone Tiles For Your Kitchen Or Bathroom

Tiles are a great way to give your bathroom or kitchen floor a great new look. New bathroom tiles or kitchen wall tiles can be used to give even the dowdiest rooms in your home some much needed revitalisation. There are a wide range of different tile materials available, each of which can be used to achieve different effects around the home. The trick is to work out the benefits of the different tile materials as well as the cost so then you can find the perfect bathroom tiles for your home.

Natural stone tiles are great tiles to use on a floor. The reason for this is because they are sturdy and can take a lot of abuse as well as being easy to clean and maintain. Limestone or marble tiles are great for floors and can have a polished or honed look to them depending on whether you want a shiny or matte look to the floor. Fitting natural stone tiles can be a difficult process so you may want to get some help from the professionals. When it comes to cutting stone such as marble tiles, you should always use an angle grinder with a diamond cutting wheel.

Ceramic tiles are available either glazed or unglazed. Ceramic tiles are normally the easiest sort of tile to cut and drill because they are not as hard as natural stone and porcelain tiles. Ceramic tiles can work well on floors and walls but are probably most suited as kitchen wall tiles.

If you are interested in finding high quality kitchen and Bathroom Tiles and natural stone and ceramic Floor Tiles then why not visit Dunkley Tiles.

Why Buyers Should Attend House Inspections

While many buyers are enamored with the idea purchasing a house, they often fail to fully investigate the house in question. House inspectors can do this for you, but you should also attend the inspection.

While you are out looking a perspective houses, you probably noticed a few things. Unless the seller is foolish, most houses are going to be in excellent shape. The landscaping will be nice and up-to-date, the painful look excellent, the house will be very clean and so on. You will find this on most houses for one primary reason. The seller wants to sell the house! The question, of course, is whether the house is truly in good shape, or just looks nice.

As a buyer, because without saying that you should always demand a house inspection by a qualified professional. The purpose of the house inspection is to take a closer look at the quality of the house. A house inspector is going to check for things like internal water damage, termites, rot and other things that appear to be problematic. Obviously, you want to know if there are any serious problems underlying the pristine exterior of your potential house.

While most buyers know that they need a house inspection, they often don't understand the importance of attending the house inspection themselves. In fact, you should try to get the seller to attend the house inspection is well if you can pull it off. The reason for this has everything to do with reasonableness. When you and the seller both attend a house inspection, you get a first-hand account of what is right and what is wrong with the house. This will almost always cut out any riffraff from the seller about whether there is a serious problem or not. This makes negotiating a financial solution to any potential problems much easier and much more straightforward.

Even if there are no problems with the house of any significance, you should still attend house inspection. Why? Well, there is a practical answer. If you attend the house inspection, you're going to get an introduction to the practical things related to the house. You're going to find out where things such as the gas valve, water valve, electrical box and other key little things are located. You may think this is something you can do easily on your own, but you'd be surprised how hard it is to find certain things on a house.

For house buyers, house inspections are an important step in making sure you're getting a quality piece of property. That being said, it is a mistake to just rely on a report from a house inspector. You are committing to a large amount of debt, so make sure that you get out there and understand what you're buying.

Kitchen Decorating Trends - Home Tips

The kitchen is the heart of the home and who hasn't spent hours in there sipping coffee with friends and family? So it should come as no surprise that one of the hot kitchen decorating trends of today is using coffee kitchen dcor to perk up the look of this much used room.

When decorating with this theme you will find that your kitchen takes on a trendy but also comfortable appeal. Giving your kitchen the look of a popular caf is one twist on this decorating method but you could also go with a vintage appeal and give it more of a diner look. Either way, this style of dcor is sure to please.

The great thing about this style is that you can use basically any color scheme. This allows the homeowner to easily give their kitchen the aura of a coffee house without having to spend a lot of time and money on painting and refitting it with new appliances. However, if you do want to give your kitchen a fresh coat of paint, you might consider the color of caf au lait - it's very popular and will go with any dcor if you should tire of the coffee theme.

Finding coffee kitchen dcor can be fun and today there are many options. First of all, you can find coffee themed items in most stores and online. Today, this trend is rather popular and you can find pot holders, kitchen towels and even curtains adorned with steaming mugs of coffee.

While all these items are great, I like to add a little unique flair to my decorating projects and what better way then to scour flea markets and antique shops for vintage coffee themed items. Here are some fun items that you can keep an eye out for that will add charm to your coffee themed kitchen:

- Vintage coffee house signs
- signs from coffee houses that show the menu or types of coffee
- Vintage sings for different brands of coffee
- Vintage coffee canisters
- Old coffee mills
- Plain white utilitarian coffee mugs and saucers just like you see in the old diners

You might also want to look for old tables from diners for your kitchen table or go with a more trendy caf look by using a wrought iron table with a glass top or even one of the modern style tables at the furniture store which actually resemble the tables and chairs you see in trendy coffee houses today.

So, you see, using coffee kitchen dcor in your home can be fun and you can even add unique appeal by finding one of a kind items that are reminiscent of the great coffee house days. With a little attention to detail, you're sure to put together a kitchen that reflects one of today's modern trends as well as a little bit of yesterday.

Your house doesn't have to be boring and you don't have to spend a lot to jazz it up either! To find out how to decorate your house on a budget, please visit http://www.perfecthomedecor.com where you can learn about all different decorating styles including more on coffee kitchen decor.

The Gig Goer's Guide to Booking a Hotel

Booking a hotel can be a bit of a blind attack these days as you never know what you're going to be in for, especially in a city. You know how it is, you book tickets to go to a concert in London and then you decide to make a weekend of it so you'll have to book a hotel, possibly at short notice. This can often end in a stay akin to Fawlty Towers!

The internet has obviously made hotel reservations a lot easier and less risky, given that most websites host images of the hotel (although these can sometimes be a false representation of the hotel) and a room can be booked at the click of a button, but that doesn't guarantee you'll get value for money when booking a hotel in the UK.

Sometimes even finding a UK hotel room can be a big enough problem, especially for those attending gigs. For example I got tickets to the Led Zeppelin reunion gig at the O2 Arena in 2007 and found it nigh on impossible to find a suitable hotel near the venue, so we decided to get the train across London, then home to Reading which made what should have been a memorable evening into a bit of a drag!

On another occasion, we went to a Morrisey gig in Suffolk and after checking the train times realised that we would have to leave the Mozfather prematurely, something we did not want to do, given that we hadn't seen him perform live for seven years, partly because he hadn't toured for a while after he relocated to Rome, but also because we missed his last tour in 2003!

So I tried desperately to book a hotel/B&B room near the venue, but could not do so for love nor money! I trawled the internet but to no avail! How ridiculous I felt, in this day and age that there were no decent websites catering for gig venues outside of the city. Booking a UK hotel is fine in the city but when needing to book one at short notice in a more rural area, it became ridiculously difficult.

But happily I can reveal that there are websites out there that now aim to make the gig goers life that little bit easier, offering hotels and B&B's close to specific concert venues, in UK cities and also further afield. Some of these sites provide well written reviews of the hotels on offer and also of concert venues throughout the UK, which is useful and of interest to fans of live performances.

It's so much easier to search for a hotel room by concert venue, especially when the hotels are reviewed by likeminded people after a good value for money room to rest your head after enjoying a concert and having a few drinks along the way.

UK hotels are often overpriced in cities, but if you look hard enough, you can often find a gem. This is made all the more easier with websites aimed at those heading off to a gig and can eliminate the worry of having to leave early enough to catch the last train home, or beat the chaotic rush from the car park - that's no way to enjoy yourself and, take it from me, can certainly take the gloss off a cracking gig.

Bathroom Faucet Leaks

Faucet leaks can waste more water than you think. Have you ever put a cup or bowl underneath a leaky faucet and actually seen how much water is wasted. Leaky faucets should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent the waste of water in your home. Water is a precious resource and should be used wisely.

One slow drip from the faucet can waste over 5 gallons of water per day. If you think that's not a big deal, let me put it in perspective for you. 5 gallons of water per day equals 35 gallons per week, times 52 weeks in a year, that equals over 1800 gallons of water, and that's a lot of water.

The problem with a faucet leak isn't just the amount of water it waste, it will soon start to deteriorate your sinks, bathtubs and showers and could damage other sections of the home, like the wood framing. I've seen a water drip in a steel kitchen sink, in just a few years, wear a hole right through it. Keep in mind water and wind formed the Grand Canyon, water can be extremely erosive.

Faucet leaks can attract house pests, like mice, flies, ants and a wide variety of other insects.

Most faucets can usually be repaired for under $20. Most of the time the problem will be in the valves or handles that turn the water on and on. If you're not familiar with plumbing parts, you could pick up a do-it-yourself home repair manual or go online and look up the manufacturer of your faucet, for more information.

Usually the manufacturer has a diagram of the faucet, broken down into sections and you could get a pretty good idea, what parts you will need to remove, in order to replace the damaged part or parts that are creating the water leak.

Calling a plumber seems to be most homeowners last resort. They only do it if they absolutely have to. If you don't understand how a faucet works and have no desire to learn how, I would suggest you call a plumber or contact someone who can help you with your faucet leak, but get the faucet leak fixed and quit wasting water.

How to Choose Bathroom Cabinet Knobs and Handles

We have all heard the old adage that the small things in life matter most. This proverb can be applied to almost anything in life including your at-home projects. Every detail, down to the last square inch of your room should be meticulously planned ahead of time. Skimming over the fine points and solely focusing on the big picture can turn what was planned to be a perfect room into a major disaster. When remodeling your bathroom, therefore, invest proper time and effort in choosing the best bathroom cabinet knobs.

Make a Splash With Color

Believe it or not, you can vary the color of your cabinet hardware to add a unique element to your overall design. Average households and apartments feature traditional cabinet knobs in traditional metal such as chrome, iron, copper, brass and nickel. However, matching the metals with a complimentary finish could easily transform your mundane cabinet knobs to the perfect accent pieces on your cabinet drawers and shelving units. Popular elegant finishes include: oil rubbed, satin, matte, Swedish, weathered, polished and antiqued.

Not sure if these options are for you? There are other ultra trendy options available for you. Accent your white cabinets with colored glass cabinet pulls. The colored glass is literally available in any color in the spectrum. This way, you can perfectly match your towels, throw rugs and shower curtains with the right color. For a more contemporary style, mix and match these colors to create a funky, unique look. Be sure to limit your colors to two or three primary colors-you do not want too many bold colors competing with your eye.

Re-Install for Easier Access

Like many homeowners, there is probably just one door knob or towel rack that just does not seem to be in the right position. Oftentimes, previous owners move the height of light switches, cabinetry hardware and racks to accommodate their needs (which, chances are, are different from yours). Do not be afraid to change the location of your current bathroom cabinet handles. By moving these units just a half inch up, down, left or right, you might just find yourself having an easier time in the bathroom.

Shape Up Your Style

Your bathroom should reflect your and your family's personality and style. Unless you prefer plain cabinet pulls, consider installing new shapes that reflect, well, you! There are endless novelty cabinet knobs out there, just use your imagination. If you're a sea lover, adding delicate nickel sea horses, dolphins and starfish add a cozy, comfortable feel. Sports lovers can choose from the plethora of equipment pieces for football, soccer, baseball and basketball. Imagine redecorating the kids' bathroom - incorporating what they like; they'll love it!

When deciding what elements of your personality to include, do not limit yourself to bathroom hardware. By hanging photographs of the family at the beach, or the picture of your son's first home run, you'll create a comfortable environment that feels therapeutic instead of plain and sterile.

Practice Safety First

Finally, one of the most important elements to any bathroom is security. We have all had one embarrassing "walk-in" moment in our lives, and we'd sure like to prevent them. Test out your current locks; be sure that you cannot force your bathroom door open when the lock mechanism is engaged. This will prevent any accidents as well as ensure privacy for your guests. Additionally, if your family includes children and pets, you must install proper locking devices on cabinets that contain harmful chemical agents. Often, plastic child-proof locks can be easily manipulated. Chances are that if your child has seen you open the cabinet, they will figure out how to do the same. Do not take the risk of having an accident. Eliminate the dangers by keeping prescription medication and dangerous chemicals in a high, dry storage area where children and pets will be less likely to reach.

Consider Waterproofing Your Basement

Those who own a home that has a subsoil basement needs to waterproof their basement. Why? Basements that are wet will spread humidity to all parts of the house causing it to trap in musty air that you will be living in. Naturally this is a condition that no one wants to live in or should have to.

Nailing Or Screwing Drywall - House Building Tips

Nails versus screws who will become the winner. When drywall first came out the installers used everything from regular steel nails to galvanized roofing nails. After a short amount of time they started to develop major problems from nails popping out of the finished drywall.

Nail popping results when the nail is driven into moist lumber and as the lumber shrinks the house settles and nail can actually pop out to the walls. Hard to imagine the nail could actually pop out of the drywall as the wood was drying out.

How far the nail would actually pop out was determined by how far it was driven in to the framing studs or ceiling joists. Well pretty soon drywall installers started to use ring shank nails to eliminate this problem. This worked great but these nails were hard to drive in and would often break.

As time went on the nails improved and were made out of galvanized metal with cupped shaped heads and came in a few different sizes. The size of the nail used was determined by the thickness of the drywall. These new nails worked great and had good holding power and eliminated a lot of nail popping.

Using nails means driving them in with a hammer. If you miss the nail you damage the drywall. This seemed to be a big problem and was virtually eliminated with the screws.

Well pretty soon people started using screws which had greater holding power and pretty much nail popping. Another advantage to using screws over nails is the simple fact you need less screws than you do nails to attach the drywall to the metal or wood framing.

This means less labor installing and finishing the drywall.

There is one problem with the screws and that is they have to be set perfectly. They can not break the paper surface on the drywall but have to be set enough into the drywall so that it can be finished properly. Most screw guns have an adjustable setting used to get just the right depth for the screws installed in the drywall. But this also was a problem when screwing into a hard piece of wood you can actually snapped the screw head off, strip the screw head or break the screw.

Nails on the other hand can bend while driving them into a hard surface.

Who wins the nails versus screws while installing drywall? I have got to give it to the screws. That doesn't mean the nails just got screwed or the screws just got nailed.

I couldn't resist. I actually preferred the screws over the nails except for when nailing the drywall corner bead on. Some drywall professionals use nails to hang the drywall and go back with a screw gun and some screws to finish the job. The nails sometimes seem handier than the screws when installing the drywall.

Buying an Unfinished Home Maybe Your Answer

For the first time "want-to-be" homeowner, purchasing an unfinished new home maybe just the answer. With mortgage interest rates still at record lows, there has not been a better time to purchase a home in decades. However, home prices have dramatically risen over the past several years, and even with low interest rates, for some the dream of owing one's own home has still remained out of reach.

Purchasing an unfinished home can save tens of thousands of dollars, thus enabling some prospective homeowners the opportunity to buy a house that they may not have otherwise afforded. Unfinished homes are particularly attractive to young couples with no children and who have limited financial resources. The unfinished home concept allows the young couple to grow/finish the home as their family and financial resources do. In addition, if the new homeowners are willing to put in sweat equity they can save significantly on finishing the home.

Typically an unfinished home has a completed kitchen, living room, bath, and at least one bedroom. This is pretty much required by mortgage lenders and building inspectors as the home would otherwise be considered unacceptable for living standards. In many two story unfinished homes, the entire upstairs maybe left unfinished.

When purchasing an unfinished home there are a few items to consider first, such as; what is the expected timeline for finishing the house, what is the expected completed floor plan and who will complete it. All these questions should be answered prior to signing a Purchase and Sales agreement. For example, if more bedrooms will be required prior to when the homeowner anticipates finishing the home, then an unfinished home purchase may not be the right solution. Secondly, ask the builder/prior homeowner for a copy of the floor plan of the completed home. Usually a builder/prior homeowner has these, and it will help immensely when the time comes to complete the unfinished space. Changes to these floor plans are typically feasible, however, it is important to talk with the building inspector prior to beginning the project. Also, in the case of new construction, you may want to negotiate with the builder to complete a portion of the unfinished area, such as the rough framing, electric or plumbing. Finally, you need to determine who will complete the work and assess how much, if any, sweat equity you are willing to contribute. In either case, building permits will need to be pulled prior to any work.

Purchasing an unfinished home can be the means to fulfilling the American dream. For many, it is also a way to buy a larger home, once completed. For others, it enables them to not sacrifice quality in their initial home purchase. Whatever the reason, the purchase of an unfinished home has traditionally been an excellent investment.

Damp Basement Solutions - Home Tips

A leaky basement can be a nightmare: the pervasive damp can cause mold growth and musty smells, items stored down there can be ruined, and the foundation can even be damaged by persistent water! If you have moisture, drips, seepage, or other water related issues in your basement, you need to get it sealed and dried out fast, before major problems develop. A wet basement isn't the end of the world, though: there are a number of solutions to get your basement dry, and keep it that way.

The first step to eliminating your basement moisture problem is identifying the source of the water. Once you have located where the water is entering the building, you can more accurately resolve the issue. The following basement drying strategies are grouped by the source of the water to help you easily connect the appropriate solution to your particular problem.

Drainage Problems

Exterior drainage issues can be a major source of water in your basement; if water is not properly diverted away from your foundation, it can frequently work its way inside. If you notice water flowing toward your house on rainy days, have blocked or malfunctioning gutters, or observe signs of erosion around your house, you likely have drainage problems. Some drainage issues are simple to resolve: if your gutters aren't working, clean and repair them. Pay special attention to downspouts, and be sure that they are directing water away from your house, not toward it! Other drainage issues can be more difficult to resolve; if your gutters aren't the source of your drainage issue, you'll want to consult a professional basement waterproofing company. They will be able to identify problematic water patterns and correct them with exterior diversion methods, which frequently require grading and installing bubblers and other water redirection systems.

Basement Leaks

Water can also work its way into your basement through cracks or crevices in your foundation. This type of problem usually manifests itself as a visible break or fracture, a trickle of water, or a damp spot. Keep in mind that basement leaks can also be caused by a porous foundation: there doesn't necessarily have to be a split for water to be seeping in. If you've located an actual crack, you can use one of several basement sealing compounds to fill it in. However, if you determine that water is leaking in through the walls of the basement itself, you'll need to take more thorough measures. You have a number of options for waterproofing your basement: vinyl wall sheeting, epoxy wall/floor paint, and exterior membranes are among the most popular. If you're uncomfortable tackling the job yourself, a waterproofing specialist can provide professional basement sealing results.

Flooding

Sometimes, no matter how good your yard drainage or how carefully your basement has been sealed, water gets in. Whether the result of a burst pipe, torrential rains, or a creek breaching its banks, floods happen. If you live in a flood-prone area, or just want to be prepared in case of disaster, you can mitigate the severity of basement floods. While most basement moisture issues are addressed after-the-fact, you'll get the best results if you're proactive with regard to basement floods. For small amounts of water, interior drain tiles will usually do the job: consider this method if you have a toilet that frequently overflows, or a washing machine that leaks. For larger volumes of water, you'll need a sump pump. This small pump will make a huge difference in how fast water is drained from your basement, and since it kicks in as soon as the water arrives, a sump pump can make the difference between a little standing water and a whole lot of standing water. Contact your local foundation repair contractor to have a sump pump installed. If basement flooding is a frequent problem, you may also want to consider a battery-powered back up pump for power outages.

Make sure you address water problems in your basement promptly; instead of going away on their own, foundation moisture issues frequently snowball into moisture and mold crises. Take the time to identify and resolve the source of the moisture-you certainly won't regret it.

And if you're not the DIY type, there are always basement waterproofing and foundation repair companies willing to help!

Plan For Outdoor Comfort Also

So you have started the planning process for your dream house. You have a lot picked out and you've picked one of the log cabin house plans that you loved. You know how the house will be situated on the lot because you knew how you wanted it to face so you could get the best south sun in the winter and the least hot sun in the summer. You've picked out all of the environmentally friendly materials to use so you are comfortable in a toxic free house and you have the dream house wired for technology. It will turn on the lights when you want and turn off the air conditioner when you don't need it. Everything is wonderful so far in your planning stage.

The next step though is just about as important as what you decided for the interior of the log home plans. For those who spend a great deal of their time outside, this part of the planning is extremely important. This is the landscape design and it can be just as fun and as frustrating as the interior design. There are many options from which to choose and some of them must be incorporated in your luxury house plans.

If you plan on having a gas grill or fire pit you need to plan for that up front. It is much easier to at the very least if not necessary. Another big item that needs some fore thought is a pool. To dig it prior to the house being finished may save you time and money. Find out from a professional pool designer. If you plan on having any solar in the yard to heat the pool or Jacuzzi then you should also incorporate that so it can tie in easily.

In order to plan well for the landscaping you need to do some tasks. One would be to determine the traffic patterns of the new home. Where are the walkways, the entryways, the driveways, where is the shade and where would it make sense to have shade? Track the sun to see where it is during the day and figure out where it will be in the winter and the summer. You'll need this to figure out where to put shade trees and where not to have certain plants. If possible see how the land reacts to water, especially rain. Do a soil test to determine if you have great soil for plants or clay that will make it difficult to grow certain plants. Last thing you might want to do is draw a small scale model of the property. When putting in your drawings of plants remember that many of them will grow so make sure you have scale full grown plants to measure where to put them. Finally take the plans to a nursery and get some professional advice if you need it. If you don't really have any desire to do the design, hire a landscape designer to do all of this for you.

As long as you are happy with your log cabin house plans then planning the landscape on the log home plans will be fun. If you choose not to plan the landscaping then get a copy of your luxury house plans to a landscape designer and work with them to create the outside of your dream home.

Transform Your Bathroom - Home Tips

When you don't have room in your budget to completely renovate your budget, it is amazing what installing a new bath vanity will do for the look and feel of this room of your home. The simple task of changing the cabinetry in the bathroom will make it look as if you have redone the whole room. Simply adding a few different accessories, such as changing the color of the towels of the shower curtains will enhance the effect.

A bath vanity does not have to be an expensive proposition with the many styles of discount vanities available. You do have to look at the size of your bathroom so that you get a vanity that will suit the space you have. For example, adding a large vanity to a small bathroom will make the room look crowded.

The vanities available in MDF are not expensive and require assembly. However, the detailed written and visual instructions that are included will make the assembly quite easy. Even the tools you need to put the various pieces together are included. All you have to buy extra is the sink and countertop, but there are some models that have this included as well.

The bath vanity is the central focus of a bathroom. This is where you will spend time grooming yourself in the morning before you go to work and when getting dressed to go out at night. You do need to have drawers and shelves where all your grooming aids are close at hand.

You can blend the old with the new by using an antique style that has a wash basin type sink that sits on the countertop. You can choose from a wide variety of colors, but the best rule of thumb to follow is to have a vanity that is of a neutral color. You can add contrast in the faucets and colors of linens that you use.

You do have to make sure that the bath vanity of your choice is sturdy and durable. You will not save any money by buying a vanity that is really cheap only to find that you have to replace it in a few years. A lot of the furniture manufactured today is eco friendly using glues that will not emit any harmful fumes into the air when they come in contact with water.

Even the smallest bathroom can have an elegant bath vanity or even a glass sink. A stone vanity, for example, can measure only two feet wide and will make a bold statement in your bathroom as well as make it look larger than it is. A vanity made of stone with teak cabinetry inserted in the center is also a viable option if you are looking for durable construction that will last for many years to come.

When you shop for a new bath vanity you can do so in many different ways by focusing on any of the following aspects:

Size

Shape

Material

Price range

Obviously the price will be the bottom line for you, but you will find that there are vanities to suit every taste. Browse the sites of the many online retailers just to get a glimpse of the wide assortments you can choose from. This will give you ideas to work with when you are contemplating making changes to your bathroom.

Creating Your Own Home Electricity

Creating your own electricity and generating your own power has always been one of my dreams. Having a self sufficient home, not only a house that takes care of itself by generating its own electricity through windmills or solar panels but the satisfaction knowing that no matter what happens to the electrical companies you will always have electricity at your home.

What a wonderful feeling it would be to get a check back from the utility company instead of paying them every single month. I don't know about you but my utility bills are ridiculous and seemed to be going up in price constantly. I can't believe all the fees they have been charging for years to all of their customers. If you add all the fees for every person in the city or county this comes to a large, a very large number and it's getting worse not better.

Generating your own electricity with solar or wind power is definitely green thinking. This is going to be the wave of the future as fuel used to create electricity continues to rise in price. I really can't imagine what the price of electricity is going to be like in 10 years as the mass consumption continues to rise in developing countries.

We have got to start taking care of our own needs through solar or wind power. We have got to start creating our own electricity to become self reliant. The more self reliant we become as a nation the less dependent we will be on major corporations, especially large power conglomerates.

Creating our own electricity can also be used for electrical cars that can be purchased in the future. Think of the money you will say in fuel costs as the price of gasoline continues to increase as well as less pollution into our environment.

This is definitely the wave of the future and common sense tells us this. I suggest you read this article again if you haven't figured out some of the problems coming our way in the future.

Think green and together we can start saving the planet.

While searching for new alternatives and trying to get some advice on creating your own electricity I came across a book you can purchase in digital format. This book seems to have quite a bit of information on creating your own electricity for a totally self sufficient home.

This book has been created in digital format to reduce the consumption of trees and the waste involved in creating a regular book. What a wonderful idea for helping our environment in quite a few ways.
