Reflections on the Changing Bathroom

Hopefully you're lucky enough to have avoided the era when outhouses were the only option for bathroom essentials and indoor plumbing has "always" been. Believe it or not there are still some houses that are deliberately choosing to go without a modern bathroom, preferring to maintain the traditions of their past, but fortunately those are very few and far between.

Indoor plumbing was a major milestone in the lives of Americans and was first only for the rich. Despite this luxury the bathroom still focused on just three items, namely the sink, toilet and a tub, but you didn't spend any more time in the bathroom than absolutely necessary. It wasn't a haven of relaxation, it was a place to get the unmentionable bodily necessities handled and then go on your way. Today the bathroom has evolved into an oasis of peace and tranquility, even for those who aren't swimming in money.

Other changes have happened, too. There are more bathrooms per house than there used to be. Having only one bathroom in a house now severely cheapens its property value, you can sometimes add $15,000 to the bottom line just by putting in a full bath. Half baths still add value, but not as much. Where bathrooms used to be closed door rooms that were displayed only when required, they are now often highlighted as a modern oasis of style and luxury. There are so many design and feature options for bathrooms today. Whether you want tubs, showers, waterfall showers, or a simple sink and toilet you can have whatever you wish. Go European and add a bidet. Fixtures are made to reflect the styles of the past and present. From Victorian to rustic, anything is possible.
